There are and endless amount of possibilities to uplift those in our communities who wish to share their knowledge and understanding of indigenous history and culture on Long Island.
M.I.C. has a strong focus on education and facilitating the transfer of knowledge. Some of the programming M.I.C. has facilitated and supported are, nature walks, historic and cultural presentations, craft making workshops, gardening workshops and more.
The founders of M.I.C. have a long standing history of being both students and educators of Long Island's Indigenous culture and history. This has brought supporting other educators and students to the forefront of M.I.C.'s initiatives.
By ensuring funding, spaces, and outreach, M.I.C. works to amplify the voices of the Indigenous people of Long Island.
A fundamental attribute of a healthy community is the means to come together in safe and healthy environments.
M.I.C. works to be able to bring communities together across Long Island. Both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people have a part to play in the acknowledgment, healing, and understanding of our co-existence on this land.
It is often difficult to find the funding or workforce to be able to hold events that allow for this all to take place.
This initiative to facilitate and support community gatherings is another priority of M.I.C. This includes securing spaces, materials, and workforce to be able to hold ceremonies, socials, networking opportunities and more.
Though the founders of M.I.C. have spent countless hours and years volunteering their time and energy towards much of M.I.C.'s initiatives, it can often be difficult to balance livelihood into the importance of this work.
With that understanding, it is important that our staff feels supported in a way that alleviates the stresses of supporting themselves and their families while also focusing on this work.
This initiative allows the room for much a greater impact M.I.C. can make within our communities.
The future of M.I.C. has been envisioned by its founders for several years.
One of the main needs of many Indigenous people of Long Island is a central location to come to that is safe and for Indigenous people primarily. A place to hold socials, ceremonies, historic and cultural classes, a place to freely be who we are as Indigenous people.
It is the goal of M.I.C. to establish a central Cultural Center on Long Island that is accessible to the Indigenous people of this land. Satellite Locations on the East End, central Long Island, and the Queens and Brooklyn areas are also part of this vision.
The list below outlines some of the materials that could be extremely helpful in many ways such as supporting our canoe culture, helping to support social events, facilitating cultural events, strengthening our connection to the earth, and more.
If you are able to donate or know someone who may be willing to donate any of the following items, please reach out to us via the contact for below.
Another helpful contribution that can be made is space! As it is with many indigenous communities, animals, and plants alike, the space to freely be who they are is extremely limited. Spaces to hold gatherings, gardening, classes, ceremonies, etc. is a major support for our communities.
