These workshops are generally geared to children or other small to medium sized groups. They often include hands on/active aspects such as crafting, nature walks and beach clean-ups. M.I.C. has a wide variety of teachers, artists, performers and organizations that collaborates on these workshops.
The founders of M.I.C. have many years of coordinating, hosting and sharing their knowledge of the Indigenous history and culture of Long Island. Until recent times, this history has been told primarily by non-Indigenous people often perpetuating a narrative that is not always true, or in the understanding of the communities they speak on. This work brings the voices from the communities themselves to the forefront of education. Creating awareness of who we are as Indigenous people and what experiences throughout history have brought us to in this present day.
This service often includes one or more of the following; a lecture, a power point, panel discussion, "show and tell", and can be tailored for any age group of any size. These presentations can also include traditional singing and dancing.
We match experienced teachers, performers, organizations and other collaborators for the right venue.
Land management from Indigenous communities around the world often differ from the modern stance on the subject. With the collective knowledge held by those at M.I.C. and their collaborators, we offer consulting services to those who wish to approach their land in a more harmonious way than many modern practices are geared towards.
Our team and collaborators have several years of successful cultural event planning behind them. This service takes advantage of that collective experience to help plan culturally sensitive events.
Cultural sensitivity is a relatively new concept in many governments, businesses and organizations. It is not always easy to navigate interaction and engagement within communities one is not from. This service is for those who wish to mitigate some of the negative impacts that cultural misunderstanding and differences can cause.
It is the belief of those at M.I.C. that land acknowledgment is an important and impactful aspect if done genuinely and with forward momentum. We can assist in identifying the Indigenous community's traditional territory on which your organization, family, business, may sit upon. If that is determined, making a connection to the community is the next step.
Land acknowledgement should go beyond the words of "This is the land of..." and more towards navigating ways to make a meaningful positive impact with that community. The animals, plants, waters, and the land itself is also often left out in this acknowledgment.
Our team as extensive experience in assisting the facilitation of this concept that is "More than just a land acknowledgement".
The founders of M.I.C. have a long history of speaking at various events as keynote speakers. From the U.N. to college lectures, they have highlighted their understanding of the Indigenous culture, history, and activism on Long Island.
